Beautiful Terror

Truman Capote, Harper Lee, and the Origins of True Crime

Kelly Kazek Bill Thornton

An exploration of the murder cases and criminal investigations that shaped the lives and writings of two of America's most iconic writers.

Two literary legends. One small town. A shared childhood. The writings of Harper Lee and Truman Capote are among the most studied in history, yet little is known or understood about the influence of true crime on their work. Between them, they delved into as many as 150 crimes, some of which influenced their most iconic works—Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and Capote’s In Cold Blood.

The childhood friends had differing approaches to crime—Truman Capote interviewed convicts as they sat in their cells awaiting their executioners. Harper Lee spent countless hours of her childhood reading accounts of murder and mayhem and watching her father practice law in an Alabama courthouse. Capote was intrigued with lurid, ready-made plots; Lee with the wheels of justice.

In Beautiful Terror, the authors tell the stories of twelve crimes that left their mark on Capote and Lee and their work. Told in the narrative style that Capote himself made famous, authors Kelly Kazek and William Thornton reveal how this vast array of depraved incidents left their mark on these two very different writers and their works. The tales begin in Capote and Lee’s rural hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, when the children unwittingly crossed paths with a future serial killer. There are crimes of passion, the pitfalls of celebrity, and a precursor to the Manson Family murders. They tell of teenaged spree killers, the young assistant to a sadistic serial murderer, a homicidal “voodoo preacher,” and the unsolved slayings of a young family.

Capote once said people live in “beautiful terror” and Kazek and Thornton’s riveting examination of the intersection of the darker side of humanity and iconic works of American literature brilliantly embodies this paradox.

Endorsements & Reviews

"Truman Capote and Harper Lee practically invented the true-crime genre with In Cold Blood. Kazek and Thornton have found a new angle to the story—they examine the real crimes and cases that fascinated these writers and shaped their landmark work. Extensively researched and written with polish and restraint, Beautiful Terror makes the case that these crimes spawned a whole subsection of our popular culture." Mark Childress, author of Crazy in Alabama and winner of the Harper Lee Award
"Absolutely soul wrenching. Every section, every murder, paints a picture as if blood was the medium and humanity the canvas. And waiting to feast are the vultures, two of the most beloved authors in history.”  Neal Wooten, author of With the Devil’s Help
